Oregon Women's Basketball: The Time Is Now

In just a few short years, the Oregon Women's Basketball team has become one of the best programs in the country. Through strong recruiting and player development they have made this rise.

Within all they have done, they have not won a national championship. That is where major success is measured and if there is no trophy in the case it's not complete.

That's not to say they haven't won big. Since 2017, they have won a Pac-12 tournament title, numerous players, most notably Sabrina Ionescu have added to their list of accolades with many major awards, and they won the Portland Region in last year's NCAA Tournament to reach the Final Four.

Again as we talked about in the article Sabrina Ionescu: "The Rise", it started in 2016 by landing Ionescu, Ruthy Hebard and five other players. good for the No. 3 recruiting class in the country.

In 2016 and 2017 they reached the Elite Eight. In 2016 they lost big to UConn 90-52, that season expectations were not as high. In 2017 they fell close to eventual national champion Notre Dame 88-84, and last year they broke through to reach the Final Four, beating Mississippi State 88-84.

Each season they've got more and more talented, and this year it's big name after big name: Ionescu, Hebard, Satou Sabally, Erin Boley, Minyon Moore. The list goes on and on.

They beat Team USA in an exhibition game back in the fall, and got the No. 1 ranking in the preseason AP Top 25.

They've done just about everything, except stand on the podium in April. Time is limited, so for Oregon Women's Basketball: The Time Is Now.

OPINION: The NBA G League's Ignite Program Holding Ground In Recruiting Tug Of War

Over the many years that top prep basketball players have been recruited, the vast majority chose to go the only traditional route available to them: play college basketball. Some opted to play overseas. For whatever reason, we have seen that the college route is not for every player. Knowing this, the NBA stepped through their development league. In the fall of 2018, the NBA G League announced Select Contracts of $125,000 for elite recruits, including opportunities for basketball development, life skills and academic scholarship starting with the 2019-2020 season. With all of that said, no players from the graduating class of 2019 opted to take part. So the G League set their sights on the class of 2020. As more schools across the country have been exposed in the FBI's investigation into college basketball recruiting, the G League has made their pitch: play and get paid fairly. On April 16, 2020, the G League announced a raised salary for prospects and a one-year development pro
