Women's Basketball Recruiting: 2021 5-Star G Payton Verhulst is monster target for Oregon State

It's no secret that 2021 5-Star G Payton Verhulst is one of the best players in the nation, and as the country's top programs have lined up to recruit her, one stands out: Oregon State.

Coach Scott Rueck and his staff have bent over backward to make Payton a priority. A star at Bishop Miege High School (KS), Verhulst has seen the OSU coaches in time after time.

With that said, OSU has competition for her services. The Beavers are joined by UConn, Stanford, Oregon, Tennessee, Louisville, Arizona State, Notre Dame, and Missouri in her top nine list.

It is hard to predict where Verhulst is headed or when a decision will be made, but one thing is for sure, OSU is in tremendous shape. Payton is very close with Beavers freshman Kennedy Brown and 2020 signee Sashsa Goforth. The latter is already starting to recruit her: "Oregon State will for sure be one of the schools I want to keep moving forward with. At least one coach has been at just about every game, even in Chile. In Chicago, the entire coaching staff was watching a few of my games. And yes, Sasha is recruiting me!"

OPINION: The NBA G League's Ignite Program Holding Ground In Recruiting Tug Of War

Over the many years that top prep basketball players have been recruited, the vast majority chose to go the only traditional route available to them: play college basketball. Some opted to play overseas. For whatever reason, we have seen that the college route is not for every player. Knowing this, the NBA stepped through their development league. In the fall of 2018, the NBA G League announced Select Contracts of $125,000 for elite recruits, including opportunities for basketball development, life skills and academic scholarship starting with the 2019-2020 season. With all of that said, no players from the graduating class of 2019 opted to take part. So the G League set their sights on the class of 2020. As more schools across the country have been exposed in the FBI's investigation into college basketball recruiting, the G League has made their pitch: play and get paid fairly. On April 16, 2020, the G League announced a raised salary for prospects and a one-year development pro...
